1. What are the settings of the book?
A Taste of Blackberries, by Doris Buchanan Smith, takes place in many different settings. For example, in the story, on page 27, it states,” I went into the downstairs bath under the stairway.” Also,” Then I went into the kitchen.” And, on page 56 it says,” Then she invites me into her garden and tells me all about growing things. But she wasn’t there this morning, and I hated to bother her by ringing her doorbell.
Timidly, I went to the side gate, lifted the latch and went in.” Those three examples showed that the novel took place in several settings, specifically, his bathtub, his kitchen, and Mrs. Mullins’ backyard.
2. What are the theme of the book?
This book had many different themes. However, the theme that I found was, don’t be a smarty pants. For example, before the bees come out, Jamie says,” Aw, you’re even afraid of a little old bee,” Jamie teased. He pulled the stick out of the bee hole and nothing happened.
“ You see? It’s just a bunch of Heather-bees down there. They’re too scared to come out.” If Jamie wasn’t being so smart and actually be SMART, than he would still be alive. Also, be nice to other people because one day they might save you in a desperate time.
3. What is the major conflict in the story? How is it resolved?
There are a few minor conflicts in the story, like Mrs. Houser’s Japanese beetles, Jamie, his friends, and Martha get into a car with a stranger, and Jamie and his friend steal apples from a man with a gun. These conflicts were all resolved. For example, Jamie and all of his friends collected the beetles, the man driving the car wasn’t bad, and they didn’t get shot. However, there was one major conflict that can’t be resolved. Jamie died. It can’t be fixed, it can’t.
4. My opinion about the book.
This book is about two boys who do many adventures together. I also went on adventures with my friend, until he left. His name was also Jamie. A Taste of Blackberries was an easy read, with many staple stories. For example, someone dies, go somewhere with a stranger, and a time someone felt alone. This novel also had a difficult situation happen, and was very detailed. I highly recommend it!
